Chania, Greece
Chania, an enchanting city of Crete in Greece.
Crete is a very nice summer destination. The language, the pace of life, the culture and even the gastronomy will surprise you. During your stay, a visit to the town of Chania at the end of the day (to avoid the heat) will allow you to escape for a while. Don't hesitate to lose yourself in the narrow streets, which are full of charm and authenticity. Let your senses run wild and take in the lively atmosphere.
Discover the Pink Sands and Scenic Routes to Elafonissi:
A Morning Adventure
If you're a fan of beautiful beaches, Elafonissi, in the south-west of the island, is not to be missed, preferably in the morning to avoid the crowds! It's its pink sand that has made it famous. Along the way, you'll come across centuries-old olive trees, pass through typical villages and see the locals busy before the hottest part of the day.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai, an oasis of modernity and splendour in the heart of the desert.
There's nothing like a desert expedition to enjoy a bit of nature outside the city of Dubai. If you have the chance, opt for a morning adventure at sunrise. Less crowded, it will allow you to enjoy the landscape even more fully. You'll have the chance to see dunes as far as the eye can see, ride camels and chat with the the locals.
Approximately 1 hour's drive from Dubai, you can discover the Abu-Dhabi Mosque, don't forget to wear appropriate clothing (loose, long clothes that cover up to the ankles and wrists). The beauty, detail and scale of the monument will undoubtedly impress you. And if you want to see even more, head to the Abu Dhabi Palace.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona, immerse yourself in the excitement of the Catalan city.
This city has it all and is clearly a victim of its own success. Having lived in Barcelona for several years, I've put together a short list of a few must-see places (some more quiet than others!):
A visit to the Poblenou district
Close to the sea and a bit from the busy city centre, this barrio can be reached by tram from the Parc de la Ciutadella. Take a stroll along the Rambla (del Poblenou!), through the narrow streets and walk down to the seafront while stopping at the skatepark for a quick break. If you're up for a longer walk, you can go along the water up to the Forum.
For stunning views over the city, head for the ‘Carretera de les Aigües’
A favourite walking path of the locals, easily reached from the Plaça de Catalunya by taking the Ferrocarril (a train) which will take you in around twenty minutes to the foot of the funicular that climbs up to the path. Beautiful views and less pollution will greet you up there!
Sagrada Familia
Get inside the Sagrada Familia! It needs no introduction, but the interior of this building is definitely worth a visit on a sunny day. Don't forget to book your tickets in advance (even the day before is enough) to avoid queuing.
Cava Vicens
A visit to the Casa Vicens (the first that Gaudí erected), less well known and just as pretty as the others. Before or after the visit, lose yourself in the small streets of Gràcia for a real immersion in Catalan neighbourhood life.
Biarritz, France
Biarritz, a glittering pearl nestling on the Atlantic coast of south-west France.
My top 3 in the region:
Sunset in front of the sea
See the sunset from the Plage de la côte des Basques (and the sunrise for the more courageous, the blue light and the swell of the waves won't leave you indifferent).
Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Stroll through the streets of charming Saint-Jean-de-Luz, just a few kilometres south of Biarritz.
Explore San Sebastian's Culinary Delights
Cross the Spanish border to take the temperature in Donostia (San Sebastian), stroll along the Concha and sample Basque cuisine (the town has 19 Michelin restaurants for food lovers!).
Nestling between the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic Pyrenees, this seaside town offers a spectacular setting for an unforgettable getaway.
Biarritz is one of my favourite off-season destinations (May, June or September). And actually, Luxair operates its flights between the end of April and the end of September. The surfing atmosphere in and around the town is truly unique and very relaxing. In Biarritz, everything revolves around the ocean, which plays a major role from morning to evening and from evening to morning.
Venice, Italy
Venice is a perfect weekend getaway or a great stopover.
The long pose
For this one, go to the water's edge with a view of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Wait for a few Gondolas to pass under the bridge and set your camera to take a photo for 1 or 2 seconds.
The colourful one
In Murano (or Burano), you'll need to go to ‘the colourful one’ to capture a very warm atmosphere. Try to compose an image that encompasses several façades at once, trying to get as straight of a shot as possible.
Cities are always very busy
Cities are always very busy and it's sometimes difficult to know what to focus on behind the camera. Look for details: part of a building, the shadow of a monument, a line of sight. Give your imagination free rein and you'll no doubt enjoy creating simpler, less busy photos.
Malaga, Spain
Malaga: between History, Art and Mediterranean Pleasures
Here are my 3 tips to make your trip to Andalusia truly unforgettable: The first one is to visit Seville at the end of the day, stroll around the Plaza de España and watch a Flamenco demonstration. Then, grab something to eat and you’re off to the Setas to watch the sunset. And to round off the day, take a stroll through the streets . They really are full of life and the atmosphere is super welcoming.
The second tip, which comes as no real surprise, is a visit to the Alhambra in Granada - a must! Especially the Nasrid palaces. And if you're up for an early-morning walk, why not first go to the Mirador de San Nicolás to admire the beauty of the building in the distance! Don't forget to book your entrance tickets well in advance, even before you book your plane tickets... Here's the official website:
https://tickets.alhambra-patronato.es/
Finally, if you get the chance to take a detour to Conil de la Frontera and have breakfast at the Malcafé, you will enjoy a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere by the ocean. I did say the ocean, so surf and longboard addicts will be delighted!
Manchester, United Kingdom
Exploring Manchester’s surroundings: From the Peak District to Snowdonia’s coastal beauty
The first thing you need to remember before going to Manchester is to have a valid passport! The area around the city is bursting with beautiful spots and natural parks. The Peak District is very close to the city and offers beautiful panoramic views, while further north, the Lake District has superb walks and chance to relax by the lakes in store.
For those who like the sea and the mountains at the same time, Wales and the Snowdonia Park are the perfect places to enjoy a truly beautiful environment. I really loved the Anglesey peninsula and especially the beach at Traeth Llanddwyn. At the very end, you can see the Goleudy Tŵr Mawr lighthouse. Ideal for sunset from where you'll also see the Snowdonia mountains looming in the distance.
Ireland, Ireland
Discovering Ireland’s hidden gems: A tranquil journey through lesser-known spots
I was so happily surprised by this country. Spring and summer are exceptional seasons for exploring Ireland, when nature comes back to life and the days are very long.
When planning my trip, I deliberately decided not to go to the Cliffs of Moher, as I didn't want to see the crowds there and preferred to explore lesser-known spots. Below is a list a few places to discover if you prefer quieter (and just as beautiful!) places:
Achill Island
For a relaxed surfing vibe, great hiking options and superb sunset spots.
The Connemara area and its lakes
The Connemara area and its lakes, you'll come across fans of Michel Sardou and a few more people but this place is worth the diversions!
Giants Causeway
In the north of Ireland: Giants Causeway to see basalt and experience a rather mystical atmosphere. To avoid the buses, the best time to go is at the end of the day, before sunset.
Bonus
If your road-trip takes you through County Donegal, a lunch at An Chistin @ Cook's Pantry is a must for home-cooked, family-style food!
One last bit of advice, I recommend you spend several days in each place to take the time to appreciate them, discover them more intensely and soak up even more of the nature that surrounds you.
Tenerife, Spain
Discovering the charms of Tenerife: A year-round haven of nature and relaxation
This is the slightly more rural Tenerife that I hope will inspire you to discover by reading these few lines. It's a volcanic island where life is good all year round, where nature is generous and varied, and where you can fully recharge your batteries.
Here are a few must-sees:
Sunset in front of the volcano
See the sunset from the Mirador de Esperanza (if you're lucky, you might even witness the sea of clouds that will fill the entire valley that Teide proudly dominates).
Anaga rainforest
Hiking in the Anaga rainforest (note that you need a permit, free of charge, to visit the enchanted forest). You'll need to book a little in advance to be sure of getting access. The permit can be obtained from the following website
Nord du pays
Visit the north of the country to discover lush green countryside and black sand beaches. A particular favourite is Playa de los Patos (not always easy to get to, but a splendid view from the top).
Masca: A village at the end of the world with a touch of Machu Picchu
For a feeling of a village at the end of the world, head for Masca. You'll be greeted by an air of Machu Picchu that won't leave you indifferent.
Marrakech & Agadir, Morocco
The land of splendour and unforgettable discoveries
Morocco is brimming with natural treasures and a remarkable wealth of culture just waiting to be experienced.
Luxair operates flights to both Marrakesh and Agadir, and the good news is that visiting both during the same stay is entirely possible thanks to an intuitive “Multi-city” booking on the Luxair website. Once there, the two cities can be reached in just 3 hours.
Discovering Marrakesh and Agadir will give you a great overview of Morocco, and you'll be able to enjoy a cultural and relaxing change of scenery at the same time.
Discover Marrakech: the authenticity of the Medina and its must-see treasures
To experience Marrakesh at its best, stay in the Medina. The old town never sleeps, and the sheer volume of human activity will surprise you. The Place Jemaa El-Fnaa and the Café de France will quickly become your reference points for finding your bearings. Don't miss the Koranic school, the Palais de Bahia and the Jardin Majorelle (book in advance!).
A festival of colors and fragrances
Lose yourself in the streets of the souk for a colorful and fragrant interlude. At nightfall, it's nice to sip mint tea on the roof of your hotel and observe how quiet it is as soon as you get up high.
A few practical tips: Exchange money at the Hotel Ali in Marrakech (it guarantees the best rate), don't drink tap water and always ask for tea to be prepared with drinking water.
Discovering Agadir: A sunny pearl in the heart of Morocco
Agadir's climate is by far one of the most stable and pleasant in Morocco. A sunny getaway is almost always guaranteed. The town was completely redesigned following a deadly earthquake in 1960. Opting for a guided tour is a really interesting option. Don't hesitate to ask about argan oil, a real Moroccan gem. The old Mosque, the new Medina and the Marina are all pleasant places to discover. Finally, the cable car will take you to the heights, offering a magnificent view of the Souss capital.
Taghazout: Morocco's surfing capital and coastal jewel
For those wishing to explore the coast, head for Taghazout (Morocco's surfing capital!) and Imourane beach (approx. 30 minutes' drive). Opt for a visit at low tide to enjoy the sandy stretches and stroll in the fresh air. If you get there early in the morning, you'll have the chance to witness live negotiations between fishermen returning from a night at sea.
Last but not least: buy yourself a local eSim to avoid being overcharged if you need 5G (HolaFly offers great options and will allow you to buy/activate online).
Enjoy your stay!
